How to Properly Close Your APY Account – Don’t Waste Time Like I Did!
In Jan 2025, we submitted the APY (Atal Pension Yojana) closure form online. We filled the form correctly and got a token number after submission. The token number made us feel confident that the process was complete and that our APY account would be closed successfully.
One lady contacted me asking how to close her APY account. After researching, we found that the form could be submitted online – so there was no need to visit the bank. We submitted the online form and started tracking it. Everything looked fine. The status showed “Resolved,” so we thought the account was closed and we would receive the remaining balance soon.
But in Feb 2025, another ₹218 was deducted from the account! This clearly meant the APY account was not closed. When we checked the tracking status again, it still showed “Resolved,” but in the remarks section, it said:
“Kindly submit APY withdrawal form with necessary documents to the branch.”
So basically, we wasted a whole month thinking the online process was successful, but the real solution was to visit the bank branch with the required documents.
What You Need to Know:
If your APY account is not closed properly, the monthly deduction will continue. Even if you fill the online form, you must go to your bank branch to complete the process.
The good news is – you will get all your deducted money back if you close the APY account before the age of 60. You may even get some interest on it. However, you will not receive the government’s contribution if you exit early.
